Cambrian's Library Has Been on Hillsdale Since 1961. Why Is It Turning 20 This November?

October 22, 2026

Climb the stairs inside the Cambrian Branch Library and you walk past an 80-foot stretch of stainless steel. It is made of 21 panels holding 74 cast-glass and bronze sculptures, and the motifs come from the orchards that once covered this part of the valley. The piece is called Cambrian BeeLine. Andrea Myklebust and Stanton Sears made it in 2006, the year the building around it opened.

That year explains the party on the calendar. On Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the library at 1780 Hillsdale Avenue holds its 20th Anniversary Celebration. There has been a Cambrian library much longer than that. The anniversary marks the building. It arrives during a fall when San José Public Library is also replacing the system it has run on for about as long, and that change reaches anyone who borrows through LINK+.

Sixty-five years on Hillsdale, twenty in this building

The San José Public Library's own history timeline has a one-line entry for 1961: "Cambrian Branch opens." Cambrian got its branch a year after Rosegarden and three years before West Valley. That makes it one of the older neighborhood branches in the system.

The building in use today is the second chapter. In November 2000, San José voters approved a branch library bond that the library puts at $212 million, enough for 6 new branches and 14 expanded ones. Cambrian was on the expansion list. The new building went up at the same 1780 Hillsdale address and replaced the old library there.

The bond-funded openings came quickly in 2006. Rose Garden reopened in February, Almaden in May, Evergreen in September, and the expanded Cambrian Branch on November 18, 2006. Hillview followed two months later, in January 2007. So the November 21 celebration lands three days after the building's 20th birthday. When the Mercury News looked back at the bond program in 2010, it noted that Cambrian was one of the neighborhood libraries that benefited and that four branches had been essentially rebuilt.

What the 2000 bond built on Hillsdale

The building is larger than its low profile on Hillsdale suggests. According to builder Bogard Construction, it is a two-story, 27,883-square-foot structural-steel building designed by Anderson Brulé Architects, and it is LEED-certified.

The design aimed at more than book stacks. Project consultant Thorburn Associates lists informal seating around a fireplace, meeting areas, a technical center, an Internet café, study areas, a storytelling space and community space. The Mercury News's 2010 tour pointed out the building's two entrances and a children's area with a child-size keyhole doorway and sliding wall toys.

BeeLine connects the 2006 building to the land it sits on. The city's public art listing says the panels draw on local natural and social history: orchard imagery, exploration, discovery, weaving and knowledge. The anniversary event page asks visitors to stop and look at it on their next trip. Since it runs up the stairs and along the balcony, you see it best while walking to the second floor.

The anniversary arrives in the middle of an upgrade

The building turns 20 just as the library's back-end system is being retired. San José Public Library says its current Integrated Library System has been in use for over 20 years. It is being upgraded to modernize the tools customers and staff use.

The upgrade pauses LINK+. That is the service SJPL members use to borrow books, media and other materials from participating public and academic libraries across California. During the pause, members cannot place new LINK+ requests or check out LINK+ materials. The request deadline was October 17, so it has already passed. Here are the dates SJPL has published that are still ahead:

  1. October 31, 2026. Last day for LINK+ checkouts. Auto-renewals are turned off.
  2. November 1, 2026. LINK+ service becomes unavailable.
  3. December 15, 2026. All LINK+ materials must be back at any SJPL location to avoid late fees. Items not returned by then are considered lost and accrue LINK+ lost-item fees.
  4. March 1, 2027. LINK+ service resumes.

Pickups end October 31, about a week after this post goes up. Any LINK+ item already at the branch should be collected before then. With auto-renewals off, it also makes sense to check the due date on anything you already have out against the December 15 deadline. SJPL takes LINK+ questions at [email protected] and 408-808-2073. SJPL's own collection, events and programs continue during the transition.

November 21, and the group paying for it

According to the library's event listing, the two hours include:

  • Opening remarks from Pam Foley, Vice Mayor and District 9 Councilmember, and Jill Bourne, City Librarian
  • A magic show
  • A balloon art giveaway
  • Arts and crafts
  • A prize wheel with free prizes and giveaways
  • Cake, treats and other refreshments

The library is also gathering memories ahead of the celebration through an online form, asking for a favorite memory, experience or special moment at the branch. For a building that replaced a 1961 branch on the same lot, those stories may go back well before 2006.

Friends of Cambrian Library is sponsoring the event. According to SJPL's Friends page, Friends groups support, advocate for and raise money for their branches through book sales and other activities. At Cambrian, that means quarterly book sales in the library's community room, with proceeds going to library programs, books and supplies. The fall sale was set for Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a $5 bag sale in the last half hour. The cake and prizes on November 21 come out of that kind of fundraising.

The Friends meet at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of February, April, August and November. This year that puts the November meeting on Wednesday, November 11, ten days before the celebration.

The free programs that run every month

Most visits to the building happen on ordinary weeks. The branch's current hours are:

  • Monday and Friday: 2 to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday through Thursday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday: noon to 5 p.m.

The short Monday and Friday hours are easy to forget, so a weekday visit works best Tuesday through Thursday.

This fall's Cambrian calendar includes a monthly STEM Workshop, LEGO Club, one-on-one Tech Mentor and Computer Help, and Reading to Children. Teen volunteers from Girls Empowered in Math and Science, known as GEMS, lead the STEM workshop. It has a new theme each month, it is free and it needs no registration. The tech help sessions run on Saturdays through November and December. The listing marks the November 21 session, the day of the anniversary, as canceled.

A new café coming to Hillsdale

Hillsdale Avenue may soon have a new place for coffee before or after a library visit. Cambrian Perk has announced a coffee shop and café at 1814 Hillsdale Avenue, Suite C, and is targeting a tentative November 2026 opening. According to the café's site, four local families with a combined fifty-plus years in the restaurant industry are behind it, and they signed the lease on August 30, 2026. The tentative hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The menu is still being finalized, and progress updates go out on Instagram at @cambrianperk. Jaimie, the general manager, is leading day-to-day operations.

Because the opening date is still tentative, it is too early to promise a coffee on the morning of November 21. If the café opens on time, though, the library's 20th birthday party and a café's first month could fall in the same weeks on the same street.

The Hillsdale Avenue building is one of many Cambrian landmarks that look newer than the neighborhood history behind them. Houses work the same way, and knowing which decade a home actually dates from matters when it is time to sell.
